Reviewed by: Dani Noir Deborah Stevenson Suma, Nova Ren . Dani Noir. Aladdin, 2009 [272p]. ISBN 978-1-4169-7564-9 $15.99 Reviewed from galleys R Gr. 5-8 Film noir is Dani's thing: the thirteen-year-old is a fan of mysterious plots and femme fatales, especially Rita Hayworth. Her own life has just been disrupted by a bit of not-so-noir event, as her father has moved across the river to be with his new girlfriend, Cheryl, much to Dani's dismay and her mother's devastation. Dani finds solace in the Little Art theater, where she's movie buddies with the teenaged projectionist, Jackson; soon, though, she finds a mystery and a femme to cherchez right under her nose at the movie theater. Debut novelist Suma manages to make Dani's old-school interests mesh plausibly with her very contemporary life: the cinematic touches to Dani's narration are unforced and atmospheric, never overpowering the authentic, sometimes plaintive, sometimes funny voice of a very real young teen ("I'm at a 'difficult' age in a 'difficult' situation, and you're a liar if you think you wouldn't milk it," she says pragmatically). Dani's mystery (Jackson, it turns out, is seeing two different girls, each behind the other's back) is crafted less as a standalone film-worthy enigma than as a situation that compels Dani because it's a proxy for her anger about her father's change of partner (she's finally thrown for a loop when she realizes that neither of Jackson's girlfriends are heartless seductresses, just upset high-school girls). The book is both honest and forgiving about the fact that Dani genuinely hurts people along the way, but she remains sympathetic and even appealing nonetheless. Even readers who think black and white means something's wrong with the TV will relate to Dani and understand her need to know. 076b4e4f54
